Emoji Meaning

Tanabata tree is a kind of wish tree, on which people place their wishes, writing them on small sheets of paper. The tree is also decorated with other things and it takes place on a Japanese festival Tanabata, dedicated to two heavenly lovers. It's depicted as one or two green bamboo stems, on which one or several red paper sheets are hanging. The emoji is often used to depict various plants or as a green accent.

The symbol “Tanabata Tree” is included in the “Celebration symbols” subblock of the “Miscellaneous Symbols and Pictographs” block and was approved as part of Unicode version 6.0 in 2010. In 2015, it was also approved as an Emoji in version 1.0 and added to the “Event” subcategory of the “Activities” category.
